About Dr Johann Pieterse
INTRODUCTION
His professional background brings together more than 50 years of executive and board-level business experience with current academic research into artificial intelligence, ethics and technology.
His earlier career was built in audit, corporate finance, governance, business turnarounds and executive leadership. He later moved increasingly towards academic research, completing two Doctorates in Business Administration. His first DBA, through Business School Netherlands in 2022, focused on business ethics in the sharing economy. His second, through GlobalNxt University in 2026, examined the integration of artificial intelligence and blockchain in online accommodation.
In January 2026, he founded AI Study Mate as a platform for exploring responsible human-AI collaboration in higher education and research. His current work includes academic writing, research, practical guidance on ethical AI use, and a book, Collaborative Knowing with Grok: Ethical Human-AI Collaboration in Research.
Across both business and academia, the thread has remained much the same: how do we make better decisions, use new tools responsibly and keep human judgement at the centre?

Johann's later work has increasingly focused on academic research, business ethics and emerging technology. His two DBA research programmes span business ethics, artificial intelligence, blockchain and technology-driven business models.
Today, through AI Study Mate, he researches and writes about human-AI collaboration, ethical AI, academic integrity and the role of human judgement in AI-assisted research. His work includes Collaborative Knowing with Grok, academic book chapters and a co-authored conference paper on artificial intelligence and blockchain in online accommodation.
EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP, TURNAROUNDS & STRATEGY
Johann went on to lead major business turnarounds and integrations. He returned Van Schaik Book Stores to profitability, reversed significant losses at Teljoy and negotiated the R870 million sale of Teljoy to Vodacom. He subsequently led the integration of Teljoy, Vodac and GSM Cellular into the Vodacom Service Provider Company.
Through Strategy Partners, he advised boards, investors and executive teams on restructuring, governance, financial strategy and organisational change, and contributed to the conceptualisation and founding of Agri Vie, a US$112 million agricultural private equity fund.
FOUNDATIONS IN FINANCE & GOVERNANCE
Johann began his career in audit and financial services, progressing to Audit Partner. During this period he qualified as a Chartered Accountant (SA) and completed an M. Compt through the University of South Africa.
He then moved into the corporate world and served as Financial Director and Executive: Management Finances at Pepkor.
This period established the grounding in finance, governance, reporting, restructuring and executive decision-making that would shape the rest of his career.
